Liwa, a seemingly untouched stretch
of warm sparkling sand is home to the largest date palm cultivating forests and
Bedouin tribes that inhabit the desert. Miles and miles of endless dunes give
way to numerous mystifying oases in the middle of the desert. After a five hour
esoteric desert safari through Liwa one finally reaches the
bewildering village uncovering the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi. For the
Bedouins this enigmatic way of life is just a regular affair. The dunes are
riddling with adventure. Sand skiing, dune bashing and desert camping are just
one of the few things that one could try out if in the mood for an escapade.
Liwa is in every way breathtakingly
spectacular. Some of the dunes are up to three hundred metres in height. Since
the elemental quality of sand has always been associated with mystery, the
dunes of Liwa are inevitably intertwined with tales and legends. It has been
said that evil spirits residing in the speckle dust call out to travellers in
order to sway them from their path. The dust particles produce a sound wave
which sounds strikingly similar to the vibrations induced by a didgeridoo, a
phenomenon which can be felt below the hauntingly beautiful skies of the
Northern Lights.
Evil spirits? It seems like divine
intervention to me.
